Instagram Coverage
Every day, Eagle Eye News plans and executes "photos of the day" on Instagram. These photos are meant to give students quick news about what is going on at our school. This post is an example of an announcement I made, using a photo I took.
Web and Social Media
In today's journalistic inudstry, the prevalence of social media cannot be underestimated. As a journalist, I work hard to to tell engaging stories on social media, whether that be through quick, information posts, or well-written video coverage. Social media provides ample opportunity to include secondary coverage and engaging elements, such as video and timelines. I enjoy it because it makes it easier to publish timely content, such as daily photos to capture unique storytelling moments. Eagle Eye News also makes use of an online platform for publishing our stories. Our online publication enables us to display stories is multimedia facets that are not possible in our print edition, such as accompanying a story with video.
Video features for Social Media
Social media is a great way to explore multimedia features. As someone who believes it is very important to highlight student artists, I created this short video for Twitter, featuring photography, a brief quote and subtitles for accessibility. It is meant to serve as an extension of "photo of the day," just in video format. Having audio brings the quote to life, because the audience hears the speaker say it directly, rather than just reading it on their screen.
The online platform provides a great opportunity to include unique, engaging content. Last year, the news editor and I attended the annual "Battle of the Books." At the event, I got to news gather, take photos, interview and make a video. Although I didn't write the story, I enjoyed gathering quotes and information for it, which I ended up including in this video multimedia element.
Video in
Multimedia
Part of my job as a journalist is to create videos to supplement our written coverage of events. In addition to planning, creating and advertising these videos, I have also set up the design of the channel. The March for Our Lives multimedia was an NSPA 2022 Digital Story of the Year finalist.
YouTube Videos
Web Stories
Throughout my three years on Eagle Eye News' staff, I have contributed to over 40 web stories, whether it be writing, photography, news gathering or creating graphics and videos. Because we switched web platforms, not every story that I have made graphics for shows up on this page of the website, but there are likely 40 more stories to which I have made visual contributions.
Multimedia Design Elements
Multimedia Newsgathering
I have written and contributed toward numerous stories, mostly news and feature, that include timely coverage displayed in both typical and multimedia fashion. For example, several of my co-editors and I created a multimedia story on "March For Our Lives," where I helped plan the story, and I also gathered news, interviews and images. Additionally, I created a video as a multimedia element for this multimedia news feature. The video was a strong use of our web platform, highlighting an advantage of posting online as opposed to in print. The March for Our Live multimedia was an NSPA 2022 Digital Story of the Year finalist.
Spotify
My first year on staff, I created this icon for the podcast that we used to have, called the No Pressure Podcast. This was my first experience with journalistic social media.
Interactive Elements on Social Media
Social media provides a great opportunity to create content that is both interactive and promotional. To promote some of our stories, engage the audience and get the student body interested, I posted a series of social media polls that make use of that multimedia element. This provides a fun and interactive way for students to express their opinions on our article topics.
