Broadcast Journalism

Out of all of my creative pursuits, I have been editing videos for the longest. I began creating videos for fun when I was 11 years old, and although they weren't of journalistic intent, they were always a fun way for me to design media. I even worked as a part-time video editor in my freshman year of high school. I also work as a video advertisement creator for my volunteer internship. In my junior year of high school, I began creating video packages for Eagle Eye News, and I found that I enjoyed creating these videos just as much as those I made in middle school. In my last few months of high school, I would like to teach our staff how to make news packages in order to incorporate more multimedia elements into our online publication. Although I am fairly new to creating news and feature video packages, I am determined to learn it as quickly as possible, so I can set our future staff up for success.

Eagle Eye News

This is a selection of several news packages, social media videos and other videos I have made for Eagle Eye News.

March For Our Lives

In June 2022, my associate editors and I attended a March For Our Lives rally right here in Parkland. During our visit, my team and I interviewed numerous guests and guest speakers. I then created this video to highlight some of the best interviews we got out of the event. This is my favorite example of my event coverage. I felt that this March For Our Lives event was a critical event for our community, so I just had to cover it in a video. The March for Our Lives multimedia was an NSPA 2022 Digital Story of the Year finalist.

Battle of the Books

During my junior year, MSD hosted its annual "Battle of the Books," a book club event involving multiple schools from our district. This event marks the first time I ever created a news package for the Eagle Eye News. In this video, I learned to cover an event in a video format. I created this news package, using lower third styles that I designed myself as part of the package for this video. I told the story via commentary which I scripted and read, and I used b-roll and interview footage that I gathered as well. I edited the text, audio, video and graphics in Wondershare Filmora Pro.

Sophomore Katie Cuadra creates sketches for her portfolio

I personally feel that it is very important that we highlight student artists at MSD. As an artist myself, I enjoy talking to students about what they are working on. Art serves as a means of expression for many students. To highlight these creative individuals, I spent a week interviewing art, drama and culinary students for various artistic projects. In this particular piece, which was intended for Twitter but also uploaded to YouTube, I interviewed Katie Cuadra in her 2D Studio Art class. Eagle Eye News Advertisment

Part of recruiting to the newspaper program includes sharing with potential incoming students just what makes our program so special. Upon creating strategies for recruitment, I thought there was no better way to get students to join than to allow our very own staff and editorial explain their favorite parts of being a member of Eagle Eye News.

Douglas Drama seniors prepare for the final performance of their high school careers

As a fan of the arts, I enjoy theater. A couple of my good friends participate in theater at other high schools, which is why I understand just how big of a deal it is for a high school performer to work on their final high school production. I wanted to create content about the seniors' experience with their last ever show at MSD. I thought that since the nature of theater is performance, a video was the perfect way to tell the story. Instead of writing a feature story, I spent a week chasing down actors for interviews and attending rehearsals to collect content to enable the actors to tell their own story in my video. I finished making the video feature only an hour before the final showing of the musical, and by the time I was done with it, I was so captivated by the beauty of the performance, that I clicked "upload," then got right in my car and drove to school to watch the show, although we aren't permitted to record at the actual show. Seeing the emotion on the performers' faces as the curtains closed told the rest of the story, the part that you could never capture in writing.

New Heights Educational Group Ads

For the past three years, I have intervened with NHEG, a non-profit based in Ohio. Their goal is to aid home-school families and encourage literacy.  I work as a graphic designer and video editor for them; however, I do not write the content, but rather I just design and edit the visuals, creating a video. I have created several advertisements for their group, so I included a few examples here.

Course Catalog Video

In 2021, NHEG asked me to design a course catalog. I have since updated that catalog both for 2022 and 2023. In 2022, the leader asked me to turn the catalog into an engaging video for social media in order to aid in promoting the classes they offer.

Volunteer Recruitment

Seeing as NHEG is a nonprofit, they operate solely on volunteer power. To help recruit, the leader of the organization asked me to make a video as a way to engage the audience more so than a flyer would.
